Epic 42 – Summer Breeze

Scenario concept: A nice relaxing game for the summer. Take it easy and enjoy yourself for a vacation. The civ is equivalent to Carthage (Industrious and Seafaring, Numidian Mercenaries), but the city names are a list of Caribbean islands and cities. (For the detailed rules, click here).

Outline of the Special Rules

This game was going for a more relaxed style, and a a goal of maximizing happiness (measured by the Happy Citizens score as of 1700AD).  The variants were there to encourage a peaceful, relaxed builder game.  The main restriction was that all workers had to be under some form of automation at all times.  No micro-managing, just tell them to auto-improve (by city, or in general, with or without altering) and let them do the work!  There were also some restrictions on city placement, to prevent ICS-style placement, so cities should have no more than 5 tiles of overlap with any other cities.  Also, the luxury slider had to be maintained at 50% or above throughout the game, which really limited early research choices!

Opening Strategy

I appreciate the work of our Travel Consultant, T-hawk, for coming up with a relaxing variant for this Epic.  My summer schedule is usually pretty hectic, and I’ve tended to take vacations FROM Civ during the summer, this might give me the chance to take a vacation IN Civ!

From reading the travel brochure, it appears we should have a fairly safe environment to travel, see the sights, and set up some resorts of our own!  Zoning restrictions and union work rules seem like they’ll combine to encourage some really big resorts over time, another Metropolis game!  Peaceful victory is encouraged, and I’m in the mood for that anyway.  In fact, with Monarch level, maybe I’ll try something different, and build one of my resorts into the most culturally attractive spots in the world?  (I’ve never gotten around to trying a 20K victory).

Time for some sight-seeing!
